Bank of the Islands Landscaping Redesign Underway

Bank of the Islands’ Sanibel office is undergoing an exciting new redesign of its exterior landscaping. Working with two Sanibel-based companies, Coastal Vista Design and Landgraphics Sanibel-Captiva, Inc., the Bank will transform its prominent location at the intersection of Periwinkle Way and Casa Ybel Road.

“It’s been more than 20 years since we made any major landscaping changes,” said Bank of the Islands CEO Geoff Roepstorff. “Some of the larger trees, the majority of which were non-native, had grown to the point that their root balls had invaded the drains causing standing water during rainfall. We hated the idea of taking out any trees, but they really had become a hazard. We’re grateful to the City of Sanibel for approving our new plan.”

The new landscaping plan increases the use of native vegetation such as cocoplum, golden creeper, gumbo limbos to create a canopy, and key thatch palms for defining focal points.

“We’ve designed a modern landscape palette that will refresh the property exterior and complement the building,” said Coastal Vista Design owner Leigh Gevelinger. “It’s a good, blended mix of native vegetation and tropicals such as bamboo ginger, a variety of bromeliads, and King Alexander palms as statement elements. This is a great project we’re eager to bring to fruition.”

The work commenced on October 30 with most of the project to be completed before Thanksgiving, after which the parking lot will be repaved.

Bank of the Islands, a name synonymous with island community banking since 1974, is located at 1699 Periwinkle Way, at the corner of Casa Ybel Road, on Sanibel. The Captiva office is at 14812 Captiva Drive, next to the Captiva Post Office.
